Clare Spencer
Reporter covering when news organizations should and shouldn’t use generative AI.
I have experience of applying generative AI to newsroom tasks in three very different news organisations.
I was a journalist at the BBC for more than a decade.
That experience motivated me to want to improve the way we make the news.
I moved into the prototyping team to work with software engineers who invented tools to help journalists.
I managed a team of journalists who used AI.
I moved onto one of the UK’s largest newspaper publishers to manage a rapidly growing team of 15 journalists.
They were a pioneering team at theI forefront of applying AI to helping produce local newspaper stories.
We turned podcasts into TikToks.
I teamed up with a small audio production company to secure seed funding to explore how to more efficiently reformat content.
I led a small team with a developer and a designer and together we built a prototype of a tool which used generative AI to turn podcasts into TikTok videos.
I am a reporter for Generative AI in the Newsroom
All this experience, so early on in the generative AI journey, led me back to being a journalist.
I saw a need for communication within the news industry on good practice and mistakes we can learn from when applying AI.
